About EM Shift Work

Who does shift work?
Full-time EM physicians employed by hospitals or EM private practice groups. Moonlighting EM physicians working on their own in a variety of locations and practice settings. EM residents looking for experience as they move into practice. And EM physicians who want to try out different locations prior to settling on a permanent position.

Emergency medicine physicians are often unaware
of the options and flexibility inherent in their chosen specialty.

What is EM shift work?
Shift work is unique to emergency medicine— unique because it allows you to work at one, two, or multiple emergency departments, without conflict to your permanent job. As an EM physician, you can work as an independent contractor and enjoy full-time or part-time status, on a temporary or permanent basis. EM shift work can be your permanent career choice.

CompHealth works with many facilities to offer temporary positions (locum tenens) for EM physicians. We're the largest physician staffing provider in the nation and offer you more EM shift work opportunities than anyone else! Although locum tenens is usually defined as varying work assignments lasting a number of weeks, we have EM shift work available for just days at a time.

Locum tenens and shift work
are synonymous for EM physicians.
You choose where, when, and how often you work.

Why EM shift work?
Locum tenens employment is often thought of as a short- or long-term alternative to a full-time permanent job. Emergency medicine is different because EM shift work opportunities do not require you to leave your permanent position. You are not required to choose between your full-time job (or residency), and EM shift work assignments. You can do both and practice medicine on your terms—where, when, and how much.

CompHealth assignments are beneficial to EM physicians wanting to add a few shifts each month. Or for those wanting to alternate between facilities and not be tied to a permanent location or setting.

We've also helped EM physicians expand their idea of "local" assignments. Because we cover all travel and lodging, you are able to take shift work in neighboring cities or states without cost or hassle, and to return to your primary residence afterwards. Medical malpractice insurance is also provided on all CompHealth assignments.
