3 must-do’s to ensure physicians have a productive first day

When you hire a physician at your medical facility how do you make sure the provider gets off to a good start? CompHealth locum tenens President, Melissa Byington, addresses this topic in her latest post for Physicians Practice. In it she offers several tips for practice owners and recruiters to prepare for bringing on new hires. It boils down to these 3 things...

Dr. Jagun advises physicians wanting to do medical missions

“What makes a good locum tenens provider? Spirit of adventure,” says Dr. Olabisi Jagun, an emergency physician who works locum tenens with CompHealth. Every year since 2001 she has led medical missions to some of the poorest regions of Africa, and she actively recruits other physicians to join her on this worthy cause. She believes more physicians would do so if they only knew how. “Many physicians have a strong desire to serve, yet often don’t know where to begin or if it is the right move for them, both personally and professionally,” she says.

Most of all, they left us with an even deeper appreciation for the work they do as locum tenens, creating widespread impact on patient care in America and beyond.

Their stories were captured in the article, "Travelers survive Boston fallout."

Part-time and contingent jobs are far from dead-end

Job growth in the part-time sector got a bad rap last week in The New York Times, which reported that “…hiring has been concentrated in relatively low-wage service sectors… and in contingent jobs at temporary-hiring companies.” The takeaway was that the majority of these workers are stuck in mostly dead-end jobs.

Interestingly, the Times doesn’t focus much on the healthcare industry, which accounts for much of this job growth. And while it cites multiple negative reasons for the increased reliance on contingent workers and part-timers, it fails to mention the positives of why employers are doing so.

Cultural fit is just as important as clinical competency

How does one determine if a physician is a good fit for a facility? Before we try answering that question, perhaps we should define what “fit” means. From a cultural perspective, fit is just as important as having clinical competency. You have to look deeper than matching a candidate’s skills and interests to the job requirements to ensure that his or her principles are consistent with your organization’s core values.
